The Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. ( Hebrew רפאל - מערכות לחימה מתקדמות בע"מ) is a state arms company in Israel .

The company produces a wide variety of high-tech weapon systems for naval, land and air forces around the world. It was founded in 1948 as part of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and is based in Haifa .

Well-known products include the Spike anti-tank guided missile , the Popeye cruise missile , the unmanned Boot Protector UPS and the SPYDER anti-aircraft missile and the Iron Dome and David's Sling missile defense systems .

The cruise missile with nuclear warheads called Popeye Turbo by the trade press and which can be launched from submarines of the Dolphin class - as one suspects - is also manufactured by Rafael. Israel will soon own six of these German-built submarines, all of which have, in addition to their six standard torpedo tubes, four larger-diameter tubes from which the Popeye Turbo is believed to be ejected.

The company had sales of $ 2.37 billion in 2016, more than half of which came from exports. That year it employed 1,500 engineers with a total of 7,500 employees. Since their wages have barely increased over the years, there have been more and more strikes recently.

The defense division of Dynamit Nobel , which in Würgendorf based Dynamit Nobel Defense , is a subsidiary of Rafael.
