Rafael López Gutiérrez (born February 28, 1855 in Tegucigalpa , † March 10, 1924 in Amapala ) was President of Honduras from February 1, 1920 to March 10, 1924 .

Life

His parents were Soledad Gutiérrez Lozano and Juan López Gutiérrez . Rafael López Gutiérrez was a general and a member of the Partido Liberal de Honduras .

In 1919, under the government of Francisco Bertrand , he was military governor of Tegucigalpa and candidate of the Partido Liberal for the presidential election. He was instrumental in the outbreak of the civil war in Honduras in 1919 .

In October 1919, he shamelessly won undemocratic presidential elections. In 1920 there were four uprisings against his dictatorial rule. He declared a state of emergency.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Central America's independence from Spain, he hosted a conference at which a Pacto de Unión de Centro América was signed. After Nicaragua withdrew from the pact and it was not signed in the parliament of Costa Rica , this Unión de Centro América consisted of El Salvador , Guatemala and Honduras. A provisional Federal Council put together a constituent assembly that passed a constitution for the República Federal de Centro América in 1921 . Policarpo Bonilla became president of this body .

In the 1923 presidential election, none of the candidates received an absolute majority; General Tiburcio Carías Andino received the relatively most votes. According to the constitution, in this case the parliament should have appointed a president. In October 1923, Rafael López Gutiérrez took power and had his opponents arrested and interned. There was an uprising by the Partido Nacional de Honduras and an opposition faction in the Partido Liberal de Honduras .

In February 1924 his term of office ended and Gutiérrez proclaimed a dictatorship. With the help of USMC , Tiburcio Carías Andino came to power, and General Vicente Tosta Carrasco became its president . In February 1924 Gutiérrez fled from Tegucigalpa to Amapala. He wanted to continue to flee to the USA and have his diabetes mellitus treated there, but this failed and he died in Amapala.
