Rafe Marion Brown (born October 1, 1968 ) is an American herpetologist and conservationist . His research focus is the herpetofauna of the Philippines , Southeast Asia and the western Pacific.

Life

Brown is the son of Walter and Lucia Brown, née Hopple. After graduating from Putney School in Putney , Vermont , he entered Reed College in Portland , Oregon . In 1991 he moved to Miami University in Oxford , Ohio, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in May 1994 and a Master of Science degree in May 1997 . In September 1997 he entered the University of Texas at Austin , where he completed his dissertation in May 2004Evolution of Ecomorphological Variation and Acoustic Diversity in Mate-Recognition Signals of Southeast Asian Forest Frogs (subfamily Platymantinae) under the direction of David C. Cannatella to Ph.D. received his doctorate. Since January 2005 he has been chief curator at the Biodiversity Institute at the University of Kansas in Lawrence .

Brown uses molecular markers in conjunction with statistical approaches to examine hypotheses about species boundaries, distribution, spread, isolation and diversity. Questions of lineage diversification and species-specific reactions to biogeographical patterns are in the foreground in his empirical work on island archipelagos. His primary field work is in the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands , where he applies a comparative, multi- taxa approach to biogeographical studies of terrestrial vertebrates. Brown is also involved in biodiversity and taxonomy studies and is committed to protecting amphibians and reptiles in Southeast Asia.

Brown is the first co- descriptor of around 70 reptile species, including the genera Brachymeles , Calliophis , Cyrtodactylus , Draco , Gekko , Hemiphyllodactylus , Luperosaurus , Malayotyphlops , Parvoscincus , Pseudogekko and Varanus .

Dedication names

In 2007 the frog species Platymantis paengi was named after Rafe M. Brown. The type of epithet paengi stands for Paeng, which is the Tagalog nickname for people with the given name Rafael .
