Raphael (also in the spelling Rafael or Raffael ) is a male given name.

origin

The name Raphael is derived from the Hebrew רָפָאֵל ( rafa ' = heal, ' el = mighty, God), which can be translated as "God heals" or "Medicine of God". In the deuterocanonical book Tobit , the archangel Raphael accompanies Tobit's son, Tobias, on his journey and gives him a cure for his father's blindness.

The feast of the Archangel Raphael was celebrated in the Catholic Church on October 24th until 1969. Since then, the memory of St. Raphael together with that of the two archangels Michael and Gabriel on September 29th .
