Ragnacharius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ragnacharius (also Ragnachar ; † between 621 and 629) was a bishop of Augst and Basel .

Ragnacharius was a student of Eustasius, abbot of Luxueil, where he became a monk. At the beginning of the 7th century he was Bishop of Basel. He is in the Vita of St. Eustasius of Luxueil known as Augustanus et Basileae ecclesiarum praesul . The double location could be an indication of the relocation of the bishopric from Augst to Basel. In the Vita S. Agili, however, it is only referred to as Ragnacharius qui Augustodunensis . Perhaps the passage in the Vita of St. Gallus , according to which Duke Cunzo of Alemannia called the Augustodunensem praesulem, who is not named by name, to elect Bishop John I of Constance , also relates to him. The mention of a bishop in the Basel region after almost 300 years of interruption is probably related to Columban's mission and the revival of the Archdiocese of Besançon, which was first tangible in 614 . After Ragnacharius, however, the diocese of Basel could have perished again, as the oldest known list of bishops is in first place Walau , who held his office in the middle of the 8th century. However, no names of Basel bishops have survived between Ragnacharius and Walaus.
