life and work

Ragnar Bragason grew up in the fishing village of Súðavík on the Vestfirðir peninsula . Already in his school days he made short films with friends . He did not complete any training in a profession in the film industry , and there was no corresponding university education in Iceland. In an interview he referred to a video film rental company in Reykjavík as his film school. The rental company offered "obscure and international stuff". He had visited it several years daily and video films borrowed. He attributes a great influence on his work to John Cassavetes and Mike Leigh .

He began his professional career producing music videos for artists from Iceland and abroad. His first feature film was Fíaskó in 2000 , which won a special jury award at the Cairo International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Pyramid. Börn (German: children), a low-budget production , received the Nordic Council's film award in 2007 and the “Golden Swan” at the Copenhagen International Film Festival . It was followed by Foreldar (German: parents) in 2009 . With Næturvaktin (Night Watch, 2007), Dagvaktin (Day Watch, 2008) and Fangavaktin (Prison Guard , 2009) he brought a three-part comedy series to the television screen. Bjarnfreðarson (Mr. Bjarnfredarson) was released in 2009 in Iceland at the same time as Avatar - Departure for Pandora . The comedy film broke several records: It was shown in 17 of 33 cinemas in the country, and more than 20 percent of Icelanders saw the film, which has won several awards.

In November 2012, Ragnar Bragason's play Gullregn premiered at Borgarleikhúsið , Reykjavík's municipal theater. He also directed it. In 2014 he brought Óskasteinar to the stage, also at Borgarleikhúsið.
