Ragnhild Hatton

Ragnhild Marie Hatton (born January 10, 1913 in Bergen , † May 16, 1995 in London ) was a British historian from Norway . She was one of the leading English historians for the 17th and 18th centuries in her day.

Life

Hatton was born to Gustav and Marie Hanssen and went to private school in Bergen and then to cathedral school. She studied at the University of Oslo (Magister 1936). In the year of her graduation, she married the English businessman (later he was a math teacher, he died in 1989) Harry Hatton, with whom she had two sons. The couple moved to London, where she continued her PhD thesis, which she had started in Oslo, at University College. She worked for the British government during World War II. In 1947 she did her doctorate under GJ Renier and Mark A. Thomson on “Diplomatic relations between Great Britain and the Dutch Republic 1714–1721”. In 1949 she became "Assistant Lecturer " at the London School of Economics , there in 1950 "Lecturer", 1958 "Reader" and from 1968 "Professor of International History". From 1974 to 1978 she was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science and from 1978 to 1981 Chairman of the History Department. In 1981 she retired. She became known u. a. for biographies of Louis XIV. , Karl XII. and Georg I , for each of whom she conducted extensive archive studies.

From 1964 to 1968 she was on the London Honors Board of Examiners in History and was also external examiner in history for the Universities of Nottingham (1965-1969), Edinburgh (1965-1970), Queens University in Belfast (1972/3) and the University of Warwick (1975-1977). 1979 to 1983 she was on the Council of the Royal Historical Society .

She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy (1954) and an honorary member of the American Historical Association. In 1983 she became a knight of the Norwegian Order of St. Olaf . In 1993 she became a Senior Fellow at the British Academy . She received the Palmes Académique and was an honorary doctorate from Ohio State University .
