Ragni Piene (born January 18, 1947 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry .

Piene studied mathematics at the University of Oslo with the candidate examination in 1969. She obtained her DEA at the University of Paris-Süd in 1970 and her degree (Cand.real.) In Oslo in 1972 and received her doctorate in 1976 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Steven Kleiman (Plücker formulas ). In 1979 she became assistant professor and in 1987 professor at the University of Oslo.

Among other things, she deals with algorithmic algebraic geometry with applications in geometric modeling.

She has been visiting scholar at IHES , MSRI , Mittag-Leffler Institute , École normal supérieure (Paris) , École Polytechnique , University of Grenoble, MIT, University of Recife and Harvard University (Bunting Institute). From 2013 she is on the advisory board of the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach.

In 1992 she was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Paris (On the enumeration of algebraic curves- from circles to instantons).

Since 2003 she has been on the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union . She is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences , the Royal Norwegian Scientific Society and the Academia Europaea . In 2012 she became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . From 2010 to 2014 she chaired the Abel Committee .

She is on the editorial board of Communications in Algebra.
