Career

Asemani started taekwondo sport in 2000 and from 2009 achieved increasing success at the national Iranian level. In 2010 she won the silver medal at the Asian Games for Iran . In 2012 she competed against an Israeli athlete at a tournament in Belgium. Since Iran does not approve of competitions with Israeli athletes, she feared reprisals and applied for asylum in Belgium. She trained with the Belgian federation under Karim Dighou and Laurence Rase , in international competitions she competed under the flag of the World Taekwondo Federation. The continental federations of the WTC changed their nomination conditions in December 2015 in order to enable athletes with refugee status to qualify for the Olympic Games. At the qualification tournament in Istanbul Asemani reached the qualification by winning the final in the class up to 57 kg.
