Rahim Schmidt (born February 1, 1959 in Mianeh , Iran ) is a German politician ( CDU ), doctor and scientist. Until May 2016 he was a member of the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. From 2005 to 2015 he was a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party .

Study and science

After graduating from high school, Schmidt came to Germany from Iran to study in 1978. After attending the Sprachkolleg Marburg and Studienkolleg Frankfurt, he studied agricultural sciences at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . He successfully completed his studies in 1986 with a thesis on cell and tissue cultures in the field of molecular biology . He earned his studies through various temporary jobs, because he could not be supported by his family due to the political conditions in Iran ( revolution 1979 ).

In 1991 he was awarded the title of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences for his doctoral thesis on "Investigations into ILAR viruses ( Prunus Necrotic Ringspot Virus ) and their spread in hops" . The work was published at the international virology congress in Giessen.

He completed a second degree in medicine from 1994 at the University of Rostock and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He successfully completed this in 2003. He has been practicing as a doctor since 2004. He published selected topics in psychosomatic medicine at the Wiesbaden Congress of Internal Medicine and various psychology congresses in 2009.

In 2010, he submitted his second doctoral thesis on the topic of "Care needs of patients in primary care " at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . He was awarded the title of Doctor of Medicine. The work was awarded the 2011 research prize of the German Association of General Practitioners in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Rahim Schmidt is married to a doctor and has a son. In addition to his political mandate, he continues to work as a general practitioner.

politics

In 2005 Schmidt joined the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party.

He was a member of the Mainz-Finthen local council from 2009 to 2010. The activity ended when he moved to Mainz-Gonsenheim.

Rahim Schmidt ran in 2011 for Alliance 90 / The Greens in the constituency Mainz II (Constituency 28) and number 12 in the country list in the Rhineland-Palatinate state election, 2011 . He received a state parliament mandate through the state list. He is considered to be the first politician with a migration background to be able to enter the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate.

In his own words, his political priorities are “health policy, migration policy, environmental policy (agricultural policy), research and science. His expertise enables him to evaluate issues of education, health and environmental and agricultural policy. ”.

Schmidt was a member of the committee for social affairs, work, health and demography , as well as the specialist political spokesman for his parliamentary group for research and health and was a member of the board of trustees of the Bingen University of Applied Sciences .

In 2012 he was a founding member of the party's “Secular Greens Working Group” and was a spokesperson until 2015.

For the state elections in 2016 , he ran for the even places 6-14 on the state list in 2015, but was not elected and thus could not achieve a promising place on the list. Three months later he resigned from the Greens because of the refugee policy. Migrants and refugees are increasingly losing out in current political developments.

voluntary work

Schmidt is involved with Amnesty International for human rights, particularly in Iran. For the International Society for Human Rights he has taken on patents for the women's rights activist Nasrin Southudeh and the filmmaker Jafar Panahi as well as the blogger Hossein Ronaghi-Maleki .

In addition, he is the second chairman of the Association for Poverty and Health in Germany eV and a member of the Iranian cultural association DIWAN eV
