The Rail way M arkup L anguage (English, abbreviation railML ) defines data structures for rail traffic on the basis of XML . It is used for the structured exchange of data between different participants. railML uses XML schemes for this .

railML was jointly developed in 2002 by the Fraunhofer Institute for Transport and Infrastructure Systems (IVI) in Dresden and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and has since been updated in the railML consortium. Version 2.4 has been released for productive use since autumn 2018 . This was followed by an update including the signaling and interlocking technology, which, after a short delay, resulted in version 3.1 being released for production in February 2019 . Both version lines are valid in parallel. The standard is licensed under CC-BY-NC-ND .

The following schemes exist:

  • infrastructure
Railway infrastructure
  • rollingstock

  • timetable

  • interlocking (from railML 3.1)

The development of a scheme for stations (train stations) was abandoned.

To update the railML standard, railML e. V. founded. This is a non-commercial association of universities and research institutions, software manufacturers, consulting companies and industry as well as infrastructure operators and railway companies . The cooperation is open to all interested parties, there are biannual meetings. The negotiating language is German because it is predominantly used in Germany and Switzerland, but all documents are written in English for better international distribution.
