Raimundo Irineu Serra , also known as Mestre Irineu (teacher / master Irineu) and Mestre Juramidam , (born December 15, 1892 in São Vicente Ferrer , Maranhão , Brazil ; † July 6, 1971 in Rio Branco ) was the founder of the syncretistic religion Santo Daime .

Irineu grew up Roman Catholic and was the son of the former slaves Sancho Martino and Joana Assunção. In 1912 he moved as one of many migrants from Brazil's poor north-east looking for work on rubber plantations in the Amazon region.

In the city of Brasiléia on the border with Bolivia , he came into contact with indigenous people , from whom he learned about the use of Ayahuasca . The Virgin Mary appeared to him in the form of Rainha da Floresta (Queen of the Forest), who, according to his story, guided him to develop a religious doctrine based on the ritual drinking of the psychedelic plant brew Ayahuasca, which has been consumed by indigenous peoples for millennia , as well as on Christian, Indigenous, and West African spiritual influences.

In 1930, Irineu founded the first community center. In 1945 the community around Irineu purchased a piece of land where the community center 'Alto Santo' was built. Irineu began receiving simple hymns under the influence of ayahuasca, the texts of which contained the principles of the doctrine, and which have been sung in Santo Daime rituals since then.
