European Football Championship 2021 / Poland

This article covers the Polish national team at the Pan-European Football Championship in 2021 . It is the fourth participation for the Polish team.

qualification

For the qualification Poland the teams from Austria, North Macedonia, Slovenia, Israel and Latvia were drawn.

Robert Lewandowski , best Polish scorer in qualification

Overall, national coach Jerzy Brzęczek , who took over the team after the 2018 World Cup, deployed 27 players, of whom only Grzegorz Krychowiak , captain Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zieliński played all ten games. Jan Bednarek , Kamil Glik , Kamil Grosicki and Tomasz Kędziora had nine missions each . Krystian Bielik , Kamil Jóźwiak and Sebastian Szymański played their first international match in the qualifying matches.

The top scorer with six goals was again Robert Lewandowski . Their first international goal was scored by Przemysław Frankowski (to lead 1-0 in the 2-0 win against North Macedonia), Jacek Góralski (to make it 3-2 in the last game against Slovenia), Damian Kądzior (to make it 4-0) Final score against Israel) and Sebastian Szymański (to lead 1-0 in a 3-2 win against Slovenia). A total of ten players contributed to the 18 qualifying goals.

preparation

The preparation should start in March 2020 with two games, the team wanted to play first in Wroclaw against EM newcomer Finland on the 27th and four days later in Chorzów against Ukraine . In June the Poles wanted to play against Russia in Warsaw and then against Iceland in Poznan . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , all games have been canceled.

Finals

Poland had initially applied to host games with the PGE Narodowy in Warsaw , but then withdrew. At the draw on November 30, Poland was in pot 2 and could have been drawn from Germany, but was then drawn from Spain and Sweden and a team that still has to qualify in March 2020. Against the Spaniards there were only two competitive games in the round of 16 of the qualification for the first EM , which were lost 2: 4 and 0: 3. After that there were only friendlies, of which Poland only won one in November 1980 in Barcelona . This was followed by six defeats and one draw. The overall balance against Sweden is also negative. In 26 games there were eight wins, four draws and 14 losses, with the last five games being lost. The last win against the Swedes was in August 1991.

If the Polish team wins the group, they would - subject to the retention of the venues - play against the third in Group A, B, C or D in Glasgow , and in second place a day earlier in Copenhagen against the second in Group D, e.g. B. England, Croatia or the Czech Republic. If they were one of the top four group thirds, either the group B winner with Belgium in Bilbao or the group C winner with the Netherlands in Budapest would be opponents in the round of 16.
