Markgraf (1956–2015) and was recognized by the government of Upper Franconia on July 11, 2014 as a foundation under civil law with legal capacity . The seat of the foundation is Bayreuth . The foundation is under the supervision of the government of Upper Franconia. The foundation exclusively and directly pursues charitable purposes within the meaning of the section “ tax-privileged purposes ” of the tax code . The Rainer Markgraf Foundation is one of the financially strongest foundations in Northern Bavaria.
The founder and the Markgraf family
The Markgraf family began their entrepreneurial activities with the establishment of the Markgraf construction company in 1932 in Eger (CZ) by the civil engineer Wilhelm Markgraf (1899-1965). After being expelled from Eger, he rebuilt the company in Immenreuth (Upper Palatinate) from 1946 under the most difficult of conditions . His son Gerhard Markgraf (1929–2012) joined the company in 1955. From 2012, Rainer W. Markgraf led the construction company W. Markgraf GmbH & Co KG , based in Bayreuth, in the third generation .
The overarching will of the Markgraf family to set up a foundation was the long-term preservation of the family business. This emerges from the preamble to the foundation statutes . With the establishment of the foundation, Rainer W. Markgraf had implemented this idea and initially brought 66.8 percent of the shares in the construction company into the foundation. His widow Irene Markgraf (* 1946) brought in the remaining 33.2 percent. The Rainer Markgraf Foundation thus holds 100 percent of the shares in the construction company. The Markgraf construction company with over 950 jobs will continue to exist and the foundation's assets will be strengthened.
Foundation purpose
The purpose of the foundation reflects the relationship between the Markgraf family and their homeland and the interests of Rainer W. Markgraf: According to Section 2 (2) of the statutes, the purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research and to improve the business location of Upper Franconia and Upper Palatinate . Another equally important goal is vocational education and training and the creation of modern training facilities. The purpose of the foundation includes the school sector as well as the practical area and the university sector.
The foundation promotes school and professional training and further education through grants, supports educational institutions and is committed to the infrastructural development of the regions of Upper Franconia and Upper Palatinate.
For example, the foundation promotes museum education in the Bärnau-Tachov History Park and the Bayreuth Artothek . The University of Bamberg and the Germany Scholarship are also funded . Overall, the foundation funds several projects with a six-figure sum each year.

It processes incoming funding applications and determines the use of funds for the foundation projects. It also executes the resolutions of the Board of Trustees. Together with the board of trustees, the board of directors is responsible for investing the foundation's assets. The foundation board is appointed by the foundation board. The foundation board oversees the administration of the foundation. Since the foundation is the sole shareholder of the construction company W. Markgraf GmbH & Co KG, fundamental questions about corporate policy are also the responsibility of the foundation board.
