Rainer Schoch (art historian)

Rainer Schoch (* 1943 in Immenstadt ) is a German art historian .

Rainer Schoch studied art history, classical archeology and modern history in Munich, Vienna, Heidelberg and Karlsruhe. In 1972 he received his doctorate from the University of Karlsruhe with a thesis on the image of rulers in painting in the 19th century. He then completed a traineeship at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt. From 1976 to 1981 he was head of the graphic collection at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt .

From 1981 to 2008 Schoch was head of the graphic collection at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg . In 2008 the symposium Image Use and Image Function in the Medium of Graphics was held in his honor .

From his work as editor and contributor to exhibition catalogs and collections of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the three-volume catalog raisonné of all of Albrecht Dürer's prints and, from the artists of the 20th century, the catalog raisonné of prints by Wilhelm Loth , a well-known sculptor, deserve special mention.
