Rainer Springhorn

Rainer Springhorn (born September 23, 1948 in Düsseldorf ) is a German geologist , paleontologist and former museum director.

Life

After graduating from the Max Planck Gymnasium in Düsseldorf in 1967, Springhorn studied geology, palaeontology, mineralogy, zoology and paleoanthropology at the University of Freiburg and the University of Innsbruck . In 1973 he graduated with a diploma in geology and paleontology. In 1976 he received his doctorate on the "Revision of the ancient tertiary European Amphicyonidae (Carnivora, Mammalia)". rer. nat.

After working as a scientific assistant to Günther Osche at the Zoological Institute in Freiburg, he was appointed curator and deputy director of the Lippisches Landesmuseum in May 1977 . In 1983 he completed his habilitation at the Geoscientific Faculty of the University of Freiburg with the thesis "New predators (Mammalia: Creodonta et Carnivora) from the lutetium of the Messel pit (Germany). He also received the teaching license for the subject paleontology Privatdozent lecturer at the University of Freiburg until he was appointed adjunct professor in 1990.

In 1986 he succeeded Friedrich Hohenschwert as director of the Lippisches Landesmuseum. In 1999 Springhorn became the museum director. He held this position until September 2011.

Michael Cell was his successor as director of the Lippisches Landesmuseum.

From 1982 to 2011 Springhorn was co-editor of the Lippische Mitteilungen of the Natural Science and Historical Association for the State of Lippe .
