Joachim Utech
Joachim Utech (born May 15, 1889 in Belgard in Western Pomerania ; † March 30, 1960 in Marburg ; full name Joachim Christoph Ludwig Utech ) was a German sculptor and art teacher.
Life
Joachim Utech was born on May 15, 1889 in his parents' house on the outskirts of the Pomeranian district town of Belgard. After graduating from the local high school in 1907 he went to Berlin and studied from 1908 at the Berlin Art Academy in the class of Woldemar Friedrich . Utech then attended the State Art School in Berlin from 1911 to 1913 (with Walter Hauschild and Prof. Frank), which he left after passing the state examination as an art teacher and craft teacher. In 1913 he moved to the art academy in Leipzig and took courses at the university and at the commercial college at the same time.
His studies were interrupted in 1914 by the First World War. During the war he was a soldier and was seriously wounded in 1918. From 1919 to 1921 he lived as a freelance artist in Leipzig. From 1921 to 1925 he was a drawing teacher at a lyceum in Insterburg . He then worked as a teacher in Belgard until 1945.
In 1945 he fled from the approaching Red Army via Eyendorf to Lüneburg , where he taught from 1946 to 1952 first at the Johanneum and then at the Wilhelm Raabe School . In 1952 he moved to Daxweiler in the Hunsrück for health reasons . In 1955 he settled in Marburg . He died there on March 30, 1960.
Utech went on study trips to Scandinavia , Austria , Hungary , Lithuania , Romania and Italy .
Sculptures
Utech created numerous sculptures in wood and stone, including granite , diabase and marble . When fleeing from Western Pomerania in 1945, he had to leave behind all of his artistic work, including a. Bride (1934), girl's head (1936) and Johann Sebastian Bach's marble relief at the Lauenburg College for Teacher Training . Of the approx. 250 sculptures that remained in his Belgarder house, he received only 69 back from the Polish state on April 4, 1957.
After the war a further 436 sculptures were created until his death, which Utech has compiled in a catalog of the sculptures with names, brief descriptions and pencil sketches in chronological order.
The artistic estate currently comprises around 200 sculptures, 48 of which are privately exhibited by their owner Jan-Hendrik Hommel (grandson of Joachim Utech). The rest are on permanent loan in the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald and in the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold .
In 1998 the Lippisches Landesmuseum took over the following 38 works from the Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg :
