University political activity

In the first years of his activity in Greifswald, Rainer Westermann was elected a member of several appointment commissions, the council of the philosophical faculty and the senate of the university. From 1999 to 2000 he was vice dean of the faculty. In October 2000 he was elected dean and confirmed in office in 2002.

In January 2003 he was elected rector by the council for a four-year term, and in October 2006 he was re-elected for a further six years by the now responsible Extended Senate.

In order to cope with the state's repeated cutbacks since the end of the 1990s and to ensure the university's efficiency, Rector Westermann “determined the university’s path in a responsible position with a strategic eye, communicative skill, but also energetic decisions ... and it’s good driven. ”(Education Minister Mathias Brodkorb ). At the beginning of 2005, he proposed a subject and job structure coordinated with the University of Rostock, which, after heated discussions, was supported in a modified form by the University Senate and laid down in the target agreement between 2006 and 2010 with the state.

Despite savings, Westermann managed to create more efficient structures for research and teaching and to strengthen the international visibility of essential parts of the university. He has made a decisive contribution to attracting high-ranking third-party funded projects and research associations as well as two national research buildings. To this end, he has retained strong research scientists at the university through attractive offers, and pushed ahead with the establishment of modern inter-faculty structures and a center for research funding.

In 2008, a staff unit for Quality Assurance in Studies and Teaching (IQS) was set up, which has now set up an accredited system to ensure the quality of studies and teaching and oversees advanced training courses on university didactics.

Under Rector Westermann, the structural development of the university was also planned and secured for the next few decades. This includes the new building of the university clinic, the cafeteria, several natural science institutes and the lecture hall and library building for the humanities as well as the renovation of the main building, the old auditorium and several former clinics.

In 2006 Westermann directed the events for the 550th anniversary of the university's founding and opening, at which the university presented its entire range of services to a broad national and international public. Important events included a. the 2006 annual meeting of the University Rectors' Conference (HRK), the 67th Ordinary Medical Faculty Day (MFT) and the exhibition “The Stone Face of the Alma Mater”. The highlights of the anniversary year were the ceremony in the cathedral and the subsequent opening of the restored auditorium in the presence of Queen Silvia of Sweden , Federal President Horst Köhler , Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff and honorary doctor Berthold Beitz .

His term of office ran until January 31, 2013, and his specialist colleague Hannelore Weber was elected as his successor in October 2012 .
