Rajmund Kaczyński (born September 1, 1922 in Grajewo ; † April 17, 2005 in Warsaw ) was a soldier in the Polish Home Army (pseudonym Irka ), participant in the Warsaw Uprising , engineer and father of former President Lech Kaczyński and former Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński .

youth

He came from an impoverished noble family whose coat of arms was that of the Pomian . He was the son of the railway clerk Aleksander and his wife Franciszka, who came from the Odessa area . Since 1941 he belonged to the "Związek Walki Zbrojnej" , the forerunner of the Home Army. After attending school in 1943, he received the rank of ensign as platoon leader. During the Warsaw Uprising he commanded the 7th group of the 2nd platoon of the 1st company of the Baszta regiment and took part in the fighting on the grounds of the Służewiec racecourse . His hand was injured. After the collapse of the uprising, he was in the prison camp in Skierniewice , from where he was able to escape. For participating in the Warsaw Uprising, he was awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari order , he was also awarded the Cross of Valor and was promoted to first lieutenant.

Working life

After the war he finished his engineering studies and worked at the Warsaw Political Engineering School , where he gave lectures on thermodynamics . He lived in Żoliborz in a very stately apartment on Lisa-Kuli-Strasse. He got involved a. a. in educational issues and organized special two-year courses at the Politechnikum for Communist functionaries at the time, who received diplomas for higher studies after graduation. Rajmund Kaczyński devoted much more time to his work than to family life.

The Twins

In 1948 he married his wife Jadwiga, they later lived separately. In 1949 his wife gave birth to twins Jarosław and Lech. The brothers became involved in the opposition, and after the end of the People's Republic of Poland both became politicians. When Rajmund Kaczyński died, his son Lech filled the position of the Warsaw City President (Lord Mayor), while Jarosław was the chairman of the PiS party . Rajmund Kaczyński rests in the Powązki cemetery . On December 23, 2005 Lech Kaczyński was sworn in as President of Poland and on July 14, 2006 Jarosław Kaczyński was appointed Prime Minister. Lech Kaczyński died in a plane crash near the Russian city of Smolensk on April 10, 2010.
