Ralf Schmidt (born October 9, 1985 in Jena ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

At the age of six, Schmidt joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena and played his way through the youth departments to the first team. In the 2005/06 season , the central defender, as a regular player in 32 games, made a significant contribution to the promotion of Jena to the second division . Then the first division club 1. FC Nürnberg signed the 20-year-old for three years, with Ralf Schmidt playing on loan for FC Carl Zeiss for another year in order to gain experience in professional football. In December 2006, however, he tore a ligament in his shoulder, which ended his professional career at FC Carl Zeiss prematurely. In the 2006/07 season he had played 14 times for the professionals and four times for the Jena team.

In the first half of the 2007/08 season he was then used eight times in the Bundesliga team of 1. FC Nürnberg. In addition, he played twice in the UEFA Cup - in the first-round away match against Rapid Bucharest and in the group stage at the home game against FC Everton . After the coach change in February 2008, he was no longer considered for the first team by the new coach Thomas von Heesen .

In June 2008 he returned to FC Carl Zeiss Jena , who had previously been relegated to the new 3rd division . He signed a two-year contract that was extended in 2010. He was a regular there for four years until the Thuringians missed relegation in the 2011/12 season and were relegated from professional football. On May 16, 2012 Schmidt announced the end of his career, citing a lack of motivation as the reason. In addition, he was about to complete his bioinformatics studies at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.
