Ralf Schnell (born September 22, 1943 in Oldenburg ) is a German German philologist and literary scholar . From 2006 to September 2009 he was rector of the University of Siegen .

Life

Ralf Schnell studied German , theater studies , philosophy and journalism at the University of Cologne and at the Free University of Berlin . After completing his studies, he initially worked in the presidential office of the Free University of Berlin and was responsible for internal university communication. 1972 he became a research assistant at the University of Hanover and was at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1976 with the work Literary Inner Emigration 1933-1945 doctorate . He completed his habilitation in 1978 at the University of Hanover.

In 1981 he received a reputation as a professor of modern German literature at the University of Hanover. From 1988 to 1991 he was first visiting professor at the oldest university in Japan, the Keio University Tokyo (jp .: Keiō gijuku daigaku ), and from 1991 to 1997 full professor. He was also visiting professor in Egypt and the Netherlands.

In 1998 he changed to the chair for German studies and modern German literature at the University of Siegen, and since 2001 he has also been director of the Institute for Media Research at the University of Siegen. From 2002 to 2006 he was the speaker of the cultural studies DFG Research College 615 “Media upheavals. Media cultures and media aesthetics at the beginning of the 20th century and in the transition to the 21st century ”. On March 20, 2006 Ralf Schnell was elected to succeed Theodora Hantos and was Rector of the University of Siegen from April 18, 2006 to October 1, 2009. He was replaced by Holger Burckhart .

Ralf Schnell was co-editor of the magazine for literary studies and linguistics (LiLi) from 1998 to 2010 . He is also co-editor and spokesman for the editorial board of Heinrich Böll's 27-volume edition of works (Cologne edition) .
