Ralph Collier

Ralph Collier Sylvanus (* 25. June 1919 , † 5. September 2010 ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Collier worked as a drummer in various big bands , such as in 1937 with Seger Ellis ( Choirs of Brass 1937 , with Irving Fazola and Nate Kazebier ). In the early 1940s he formed the rhythm section with Mel Powell (piano) and Sid Weiss (bass) for Benny Goodman , on whose recordings he participated with Peggy Lee , for example on her number 1 hit Somebody Else is Taking My Place (1942) . He also worked with Ina Ray Hutton , Bob Crosby and the Stan Kenton Orchestra. In 1953 he recorded a song as a conga player with Duke Ellington (on Piano Reflections ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 70 recording sessions between 1937 and 1959, including a. also with Frank Sinatra (1951), Earl Hines , Calvin Jackson ( Cal-Essence , 1959) and André Previn ( Plays My Fair Lady ). Collier was also active as a drum teacher; one of his students was u. a. Ed Thigpen .
