Ralph Shirley

Ralph Shirley of Lower Ettington (* before August 1408; † December 26, 1466 ) was an English Esquire .

Life

Ralph Shirley was a son of his father of the same name, Ralph Shirley, and his first wife, Joan Basset, a daughter of Thomas Basset from Brailsford in Derbyshire . His father died in 1443, and Shirley inherited his estates, including estates in Shirley , Hope and other estates in Derbyshire, Ettington in Warwickshire and Barnham in Suffolk . With his stepmother Alice Cockayne he led a bitter dispute over their Wittum , which was not settled until 1447. His stepmother did not die until May 1466, her heir became his stepbrother, who was also called Ralph. Through a mother he inherited Brailsford and several estates in Leicestershire. His father arranged for him to marry Margaret Staunton, for which he received a papal dispensation on September 23, 1423 . His wife was the only daughter and ultimately sole heir to her father, John Staunton . Through her he came into the possession of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire, which was administered by his father until he came of age around 1429. In 1433, Shirley paid homage to the King for Brailsford and Staunton Harold.

Shirley was constable of Melbourne Castle in Derbyshire, constable of Burton Overy in Leicestershire and from 1443 in charge of the royal forests in High Peak for nine years .

His father and grandfather Hugh Shirley had been long-time vassals of the Duchy of Lancaster . During the Wars of the Roses , Shirley therefore supported the House of Lancaster and fought in 1455 in the First Battle of St Albans , 1459 in the Battle of Blore Heath and 1460 in the Battles of Northampton and Wakefield . In 1461 he took part in the Second Battle of St Albans and the Battle of Towton .

After his death in 1466 he was buried in Brailsford , Derbyshire .

Marriage and offspring

Ralph Shirley was married three times. From his first marriage to Margaret Staunton, he had a son:

  • John Shirley (around 1427–1485)

In his second marriage he married Elizabeth Blount, a daughter of Sir John Blount. With her he had at least one other son:

  • Sir Ralph († 1510)

In his third marriage he married Lucy Aston, a daughter of Sir John Aston. The marriage remained childless.

His main heir became his eldest son, John.
