Ralphe Armstrong

Ralphe Armstrong (* 1956 in Detroit ) is an American fusion - and jazz - bassist .

Armstrong had a classical education at the Michigan Interlochen School of Fine Arts; At the age of 17 he became a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the mid-1970s , on whose albums Apocalypse , Visions of the Emerald Beyond and Inner Worlds he participated. In Detroit he worked with Phil Ranelin , Dr. Lonnie Smith , also with Bennie Maupin ( Cosmic Passenger , 1976) and Jean-Luc Ponty ( Enigmatic Ocean , 1977). In the 1980s and 90s he also played with Eddie Harris , Earl Klugh , Geri Allen ( The Gathering ) and the Michigan Jazz Masters (with Marcus Belgrave , Wendell Harrison and Harold McKinney ). A recording from the Detroit Jazz Festival was released on the 2014 album HomeBASS . In 2001 he performed with James Carter at Baker's Keyboard Lounge . In the field of jazz he was involved in 28 recording sessions between 1974 and 2013, outside of jazz also with Dave Mason , Aretha Franklin and Patti Austin . He also works as a theater musician in Detroit and teaches bass at the Oberlin Conservatory.
