The Ramandolo is a sweet white wine from Friuli . It comes from the very small DOCG Ramandolo , only 40 hectares of cultivation area, in the municipal areas of Nimis and Tarcento , northeast of Udine , near the border with Slovenia . This area has only been designated as DOCG since 2001, and these wines have also been on the market since then. However, the history of viticulture and especially the production of sweet wines goes back much further, at least as far as the early Middle Ages.

The wines are made exclusively from grapes of the white Verduzzo Friulano , also known locally as "Verduzzo giallo". The often steep vineyards are located on southern slopes at a height of about 300–500 meters. To the north and northeast, the area is protected by Monte Bernadia , and to the south it is open to the Adriatic Sea .

The harvest does not begin until mid-October and can last until mid-November, in ideal years until December. Usually the grapes are not laid out, but dry out on the vine. Botrytis is undesirable. After destemming, the carefully pressed grapes are usually fermented very slowly in steel tanks, and in excellent years in relatively small oak barrels. They are then moved to new barrique barrels and mature for between 6 months and a year. After bottling in the 0.35 or 0.5 liter bottles with characteristic Celtic spiral and wheel symbols, they are put on the market after a further maturation period of at least half a year. Only higher grades from large vintages mature in barrels for several years.

Successful Ramandolos are among the most outstanding sweet wines in Italy; In terms of quality, they are often to be placed above the significantly more expensive and famous Picolit . Ramandolos are bright golden yellow to amber-colored wines with a nuanced, never obtrusive sweetness and a differentiated acid structure; they often have intense almond or hazelnut aromas. Their alcohol content is at least 14  % by volume , the residual sugar content between 5 and 6%, which corresponds to about 80-90 grams / liter. A Ramandolo should be drunk chilled, but not cold. If the storage quality is appropriate, bottle-grown Ramandolos can be stored for many years without any change in quality.
