Ramón Cugat Bertomeu (born August 25, 1950 in L'Aldea , Tarragona , Spain ) is a Spanish doctor specializing in orthopedic surgery. He is a specialist in orthopedic surgery. Cugat is internationally recognized for his expertise in orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopy and as an expert in knee injuries. He is a pioneer in arthroscopic surgery in Spain and was a member of the orthopedic surgeon team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Since the beginning of 2000 he has been using growth factors in his treatment of anterior cruciate ligament injuries and cartilage and their restoration, and stem cells since 2013 .

Throughout his career he has been associated with the Mutualitat Catalana de Futbolistes (Catalan Professional Association of Footballers) and has operated thousands of players in all categories. Among the players he has treated are: Pep Guardiola , Samuel Eto'o , Cesc Fàbregas , Andrés Iniesta , David Villa , Fernando Torres and Thiago .

He worked in hospitals in Spain, England and the United States of America. He is currently Head of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Department at the Quiron Barcelona Clinic , Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Garcia Cugat Foundation for Biomedical Research, and President of the Medical Association of the Mutualitat Catalana de Futbolistes (Catalan Professional Association of Footballers) of the Royal Spanish Football Association.

He is Associate Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Barcelona and the University of CEU Cardenal Herrera Valencia, as well as Co-Director of the Chair of Medicine and Regenerative Surgery, founded in 2013 by the Garcia Cugat Foundation and the University of Cardenal Herrera Valencia (CEU) . He is also a member of the international team of the International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) faculty.

Cugat comes from a farming family and his father expected him to continue this tradition. However, when he had just turned 15 in 1965, he moved to Barcelona, ​​where he was tentatively selected to play on the FC Barcelona youth team. He was taken and joined the team where he played until 1971.

In 1969 he enrolled in the Medical Faculty of the University of Barcelona and began under the direction of Dr. Jose Garcia Cugat, founder of the Spanish Arthroscopy Association, started his sports medicine ventures. In 1975 he graduated in medicine and surgery. In 1978 he received his doctorate and in 1979 the title of specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery. He also completed his first major in England in 1979.

In 1980 he began working with Bertram Zarins, director of sports medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard University in Boston (USA).

In 1990 he was appointed co-professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. From 1992 to 2004 he worked as a medical assistant in the trauma and orthopedics department at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, ​​where he headed the arthroscopic surgery department.

In 2007 he moved to the "Quiron" Clinic in Barcelona and took on the position of Deputy Director of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Trauma Surgery, where he is still today.

He is married to Dr. Montserrat Garcia Balletbó Pathology specialist currently focusing on the study of biological therapies. They have three children: Debora, Carolina and Pepe. From 1989 to 1993 he was a member of the board of directors of the International Arthroscopy Association, an organization which in 1995 became the International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), of which Ramon Cugat has been an active part since its foundation. As a professor, he participated in international congresses, e. B. in India, China, Georgia, Latvia, Cuba, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Turkey among others

Since 1999 his practice has been recognized as an ISAKOS-approved training center and every year numerous students visit the center in Barcelona as part of their training.

Regenerative Medicine

At the beginning of 2000 he began research in regenerative medicine , together with Dr. Eduardo Anitua and Mikel Sanchez on enriched plasma and its use in trauma as growth factors . This form of treatment has made him an international player.

His collaboration with teams of veterinarians, first in the Autonomous Community of Valencia and Barcelona, ​​and then in the Canary Islands, Murcia and Andalusia, culminated in 2007 with the creation of the Garcia Cugat Foundation for Biomedical Research, of which he is Chairman of the Board of Directors is.

Since 2010, through the Garcia Cugat Foundation, he began research into the application of stem cells to lesions of the musculoskeletal system, initially in animals and in 2013 in humans.
