Ramon E. Moore

Ramon Edgar Moore ( December 27, 1929 - April 1, 2015 in Sacramento, California ) was an American mathematician . Moore is best known for his pioneering work on interval arithmetic , a method of applied mathematics with which the reliability of numerical calculations can be significantly improved.

Moore received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1960 and his PhD in mathematics from Stanford University in 1963 . From 1956 to 1964 he worked in the research center of the Lockheed company , then from 1965 to 1981 he was professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and from 1986 to 2000 at Ohio State University . Moore was visiting professor at universities in England, Germany and Sweden.

His most important writing is certainly the book Interval Analysis , with which he made the field of interval arithmetic known to other research circles. Moore was also active in the field of optimization. There he developed the Moore-Skelboe algorithm with Stig Skelboe . This is considered to be the first branching and bounding procedure based on interval arithmetic for global optimization.
