The Range Creek is a left tributary of the Green River in the State of Utah . It forms the Range Creek Canyon in the Book Cliffs and flows through the Counties Carbon and Emery . The river, which carries water all year round, has been nominated for classification as a National Wild and Scenic River .
The Range Creek valley is very difficult to access. The lower reaches can be reached with all-terrain vehicles on a jeep trail on the Green River, to the upper reaches paths that can only be followed on foot and with pack animals. Because of the remoteness, many archeological sites of the Fremont culture have been preserved in the valley . In addition to rock carvings, this mainly includes granaries.
The area around the river was originally owned by rancher Waldo Wilcox. When he first saw the area, he recognized the value of the land and protected it with a “no passage” sign. In 2001 he sold the land to the state of Utah, but retained the rights to all mineral and energy sources.
