The Rat River (French name: Rivière aux Rats ) is an approximately 190 km long right tributary of the Red River of the North in the southeast of the Canadian province of Manitoba .

The Rat River rises in the extreme southeast of Manitoba north of Badger on Provincial Road 203 . The headwaters are 50 km west of Lake of the Woods and 22 km north of the US border at an altitude of 380  m . The Rat River initially flows 50 miles in a predominantly westerly direction, before turning northwest and finally flowing north-northwest. The Rat River flows through a prairie landscape in the middle and lower reaches . It shows a strongly meandering behavior with countless river bends and oxbow lakes along its entire course . The river is mostly flanked by a narrow belt of alluvial forest . The Manitoba Highway 59 runs in parts along the river. The places Saint-Malo and Otterburne are on the middle and lower reaches. At Saint-Malo the river is dammed up by a weir to form a 63.9 hectare reservoir. This forms the core of the St. Malo Provincial Park , which mainly serves as a recreation area. The Rat River finally joins the Red River of the North 4 km northeast of Sainte-Agathe and 33 km south of downtown Winnipeg . 9 km above the mouth, the Marsh River meets the Rat River from the left. The Provincial Road 200 crosses the flow immediately above the mouth thereof. The Rat River runs through the settlement area of the French-speaking minority of Manitoba. The Roseau River runs south of the Rat River and the Seine River further north .

Hydrology
