Zombey (bourgeois Michael Rankl ; born October 12, 1992 in Munich ) is a German web video producer who gained fame through the publication of Let's Plays on YouTube . In 2017 he was one of the 50 most successful Let's-Players and Gaming-YouTubers in the German-speaking region (8th place after subscribers and 14th place in terms of video views) and in 2016 Playnation wrote that he was considered "a veteran of the scene".

Career on YouTube

The nickname “Zombey” is derived from an exclamation that Rankl used as a child with a friend while playing zombie games. In November 2010 he created a YouTube channel called z0mb3yz0ck and uploaded his first Let's Play videos there. This Leetspeak variant of his nickname turned out to be too difficult. Rankl therefore took over the existing Zombey channel from its previous owner and has been uploading videos there since October 14, 2011. z0mb3yz0ck has been inactive since then. Currently (as of July 13, 2020) the Zombey channel has around 1,950,000 subscribers and is 91st in the list of the most subscribed YouTube channels in Germany .

Zombey's trademark is the canal avatar , which depicts a man with a top hat and monocle . The videos are often created in collaboration with friends and youTubers Paluten , GermanLetsPlay and Maudado, who together with Zombey call themselves the "Freedom Squad". Often presented games are as Minecraft , Golf It and Grand Theft Auto V . In addition, Zombey has a particular preference for computer role-playing games , but also games in which you have to solve puzzles. He occasionally hosts live streams , some of which are published on Twitch and some on a separate YouTube channel called the Zombey Stream Archive . He is also regularly active on Twitter.

Since 2012 Zombey has been part of the team at gronkh.de , a group of web video producers based around the Let's player Gronkh . Together, this group moved to the multi-channel network Studio 71 in 2014 , which Zombey still belongs to today. The Zombey YouTube channel is managed by PlayMassive GmbH, which was founded by the two gronkh.de members Gronkh and Sarazar .

Private

Zombey's real name is Michael Rankl and claims to have completed a university degree. His partner is active on YouTube under the nickname MissChessie and occasionally produces videos on the subject of dog ownership. Zombey and MissChessie own the three dogs Gonzo, Balu and Molly.

In his FAQ it becomes clear that he keeps private information (such as his completed degree or place of residence) secret and is of the opinion that these are not important for the public. He's also reluctant to show his face.

Apart from his videos, Zombey tries to stay out of the public eye, which is why he doesn't go to conventions or sell merchandise . He also does not refer to his subscribers as fans and asks them not to refer to themselves as such.
