Its river diversion

The Seine River (French name: Rivière Seine ) is an approximately 110 km long right tributary of the Red River of the North in the southeast of the Canadian province of Manitoba .

The Seine River creates multiple source streams at the confluence southwest of Marchand in the rural community ( rural municipality ) La Broquerie . The headwaters are 73 km southeast of downtown Winnipeg at an altitude of about 290  m . The Seine River flows in a predominantly northwestern direction through the prairie landscape in southeast Manitoba . He passes the village of La Broquerie . After 38 km south of Sainte-Anne, a diversion channel, the so-called Seine River Diversion , branches off to the west. The Seine River then flows through the commune of Sainte-Anne. 8.5 km northwest of Sainte-Anne, the Seine River turns west just before the Trans-Canada Highway . The Seine River passes the parish of Lorette . Shortly before reaching the city of Winnipeg, the Seine River meets the Red River Floodway . He crosses this by means of a culvert . The river then meanders for another 20 km in a north-northwest direction through the urban area before flowing into the Red River of the North in the city center.

The Seine River shows a strongly meandering behavior with countless river loops and oxbow lakes over almost its entire course . On these sections it is mostly flanked by a narrow belt of alluvial forest . In the city of Winnipeg, it is bordered by several parks.

Flood protection

Similar to the Red River of the North, the Seine River is a prairie river and carries very little water for most of the year. However, as the snowmelts, runoff can increase tremendously and cause severe flooding. As the Seine River flows through the urban area of Winnipeg, a drainage canal, the so-called Seine River Diversion , was built south of Sainte-Anne in 1960 as a flood protection measure . This runs 35 km to the west and ends 22 km south of downtown Winnipeg on the east bank of the Red River of the North.

In addition, the culvert that crosses under the Red River Floodway is designed in such a way that water quantities that exceed a discharge of 4.3 m³ / s are drained directly into the floodway.
