town hall

The town hall at Marktplatz 1 in the town of Merkendorf in the Franconian Lake District ( Middle Franconia ) is a late Gothic building . The two-storey town hall consists partly of solid sandstone masonry and is partly equipped with varied half-timbering .

history

The first council meeting was held in 1479. In 1933, a three-part relief was attached above the portal, which is decorated with the coat of arms of Merkendorf . It commemorates the visit of King Maximilian I in 1506. The king can be seen in the middle of the relief, citizens of Merkendorf pay homage to him on the left and Maximilian I's entourage can be seen on the right. A commemorative plaque at the town hall reads: "On the Monday after All Saints Day 1506, Kayßer Maximilian was approved in this town hall."

The current town hall dates from the years after the Thirty Years War . The previous building was destroyed on March 12, 1648 by a fire caused by Swedish horsemen, which destroyed much of the city. After the reconstruction, it served as a pharmacy .

The town hall was privately owned from 1856 to 1987. Among other things, it belonged to the Merkendorfer brewery Hellein . After it had bought back the city and subjected to extensive renovation, it was rededicated as the town hall in 1991. The city administration was housed in the tithe barn until then . In the same year from a well was Ansbacher created artist herb fountain opened on the town hall square. It shows a couple of herb farmers at work and recalls the centuries-old herb tradition in the Merkendorf area, which began after the Thirty Years War and lasted until the 1970s.

In 2006, the outside of the town hall was renovated because the wood worm had nested itself in the framework . The Merkendorf town hall is a defining part of the market square in the herb town.
