Town hall Bernburg II, former princely riding school

The Bernburg II town hall is a building used by the city administration of Bernburg (Saale) .

The building, not far from the town hall of Bernburg at Schlossstrasse 11 , was built in the years 1756/57 in the late Baroque style as a princely riding school ( Marstall ). There is an inscription plaque above the central risalit of the elongated building.

The client was Prince Viktor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg , who had the riding arena built near Bernburg Castle. In the years 1824/25 a renovation and expansion took place under Alexius Friedrich Christian von Anhalt-Bernburg . After the state of Anhalt had acquired the palace complex from 1878 for the purpose of using it as a garrison , another, this time fundamental, reconstruction followed from 1919 to 1921 by the Anhalt State Building Administration based on a design by H. Wendler . The use as a riding arena was given up. An administration building was created while creating a completely new spatial structure. Halls, stairwells and corridors were laid out. The stairs and corridors were designed in the Art Deco style. Richard Degenkolbe from Halle (Saale) was responsible for the room settings. In the southern part, a staircase with colored plastic figures was built, which is still preserved today.

From 1921 to 1990 the building served as district building II as the administrative building of the district administration of the district of Bernburg . Since then it has been in use by the Bernburg city administration.
