The Harzgerode town hall is the listed town hall of the Harzgerode town in Saxony-Anhalt in the Harz region .

location

It is located at Marktplatz 1 on the south side of the market square in the center of the city.

Architecture and history

The town hall was built in 1900 and 1901 on the site of a previous building built in 1639. The cellar vaults and two inscription panels have been preserved from the previous building. In the foyer there is a wooden plaque from 1639 on which the names of the council members who awarded the building contract are recorded. A relief from 1726 shows the city arms. Before the old building from 1639 there was another previous building in the same place.

The large representative building consists of two wings and is richly decorated based on the old town hall. The upper floors are half-timbered and partly decorated with medieval elements such as footbands and curtain arches. Other decorative elements, such as the ship throats , the dew-rod and the town hall tower, adorn forms of the Renaissance or, like the diamond pattern, the Baroque . The tower has a polygonal floor plan and a three-tiered hood. To the north there is a bay window with neo-Gothic arched curtain windows.

The massive ground floor has an entrance staircase with a seating niche portal and windows designed as round arches.

On April 14, 1945, a meeting in the town hall decided to declare Harzgerode an open city in view of the approaching US troops . However, a white flag that was hoisted on the town hall on April 15, 1945 had to be retrieved because a German combat unit had unexpectedly entered. When the artillery fire started shortly afterwards by the US troops, a shell struck next to the town hall. The principal of the middle school Franz Pfeil , who was in the building, was killed.

Inside the house, some of the original features have been preserved, so the doors and the stairs are still in their original form.

In the local register of monuments , the building is listed as the town hall under registration number 094 84551.
