The Rathaus Tiergarten on Mathilde-Jacob-Platz is home to one of the three civil offices of the district office center of Berlin . Together with the Arminiusmarkthalle behind it , the building forms the urban center of Moabit . The building is a listed building .

history

The five-storey building was designed by Richard Ermisch , City Planning Director , and it was erected from 1935 to 1937 on the former Arminiusplatz. In 1941 six additional offices were added. With the courtyard of honor, the natural stone facing, the saddle roof , the protruding portico and the "Führerbalkon", which was common at the time, Ermisch designed the building in the style of National Socialist architecture . After the introduction of the “ Führer principle ”, only administration rooms were needed, while rooms for local self-administration could be omitted. With this town hall, Moabit not only lost a central place in this location: the building also represented the National Socialist claim to rule in this district that was once shaped by the labor movement . Only after the Second World War did the Tiergarten district add the district ordinance hall from 1952 to 1953.

During the Second World War , parts of the west wing and the main wing were destroyed, other components were only slightly damaged. The war damage was repaired from 1948 and completed in 1951 at the same time as the redesign of the vestibule at the main entrance. In June 1952 the extension of a meeting room was started, in March 1953 it was completed and inaugurated. Until the district reform in 2001 it served as the administrative seat of the Tiergarten district , since then it has been the official administrative seat of the Mitte district .
