The town hall is located in the old town of Passau on Rathausplatz, near the banks of the Danube . The Passau town hall complex consists of three buildings on the town hall square: the old town hall , the new town hall and the town hall old main customs office .

Old Town Hall

The beginnings of the old town hall go back to the year 1298, when the citizens won the town hall in a revolt against the prince-bishop. The hall building, built in the Venetian style, dates back to 1405. The original facade frescoes from 1446 by Ruprecht Fueterer and Rueland Frueauf the Elder were replaced in 1922 by Joseph Hengge from Kempten (Allgäu) with modern murals depicting Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian and four Show the flag bearers of the Electorate of Saxony , Kurtrier , Kurköln and the Duchy of Bavaria . In the inner courtyard is the Liendlbrunnen from 1555, which used to be on Residenzplatz. Today's town hall complex was made up of eight buildings over the years. In the south, the town hall is closed off by the former Kuenberburg Palace, which was built by Bartholomäus Opstal in 1680–82 and has stucco ceilings by Paolo d'Allio on the inside .

Town hall tower

The 38 meter high tower was added by Heinrich Freiherr von Schmidt between 1889 and 1892 as a replacement for the previous tower that was demolished in 1811. Originally the tower had a roof turret, which was demolished in 1938 because it was dilapidated. After two devastating floods at the end of the 19th century, a start was made on attaching corresponding high water marks to the town hall tower, which were supplemented by other historical high water marks from before 1890, some of which were incorrect, in the city area. The incorrect marks are corrected at longer intervals if necessary. In 1991 an automatic carillon with 23 bells was installed in the tower, which since 2007 can also be played as a carillon .

Town hall halls

The halls of the town hall can be reached via a Gothic staircase from 1446. The halls were designed by Carlo Lurago and Giovanni Battista Carlone after the city fire . The colossal paintings in the “Großer Rathaussaal”, which show Kriemhild's entry into the city of Passau and the wedding of Emperor Leopold I in 1676, as well as the rest of the painting in both halls, were created by the history painter Ferdinand Wagner from 1887 to 1893. The “Great Town Hall Hall” serves primarily as a representative setting for events. The “Small Town Hall Hall” is used by the registry office for weddings and the city council as a meeting room.

New town hall and old main customs office

Facade of the "New Town Hall"

The old town hall is flanked on Rathausplatz in the west by the new town hall and in the east by the old main customs office . In these parts of the town hall there are mainly offices of the city administration. The New Town Hall was originally the seat of a brewery. A stone carving on the facade is evidence of this today. The tourist information rooms are located in the old town hall. The old main customs office was built between 1848 and 1851 in place of the old dance hall, which had been the seat of the customs office since 1806. The old main customs office was acquired by the city of Passau from the federal government in 2007 after the main customs office in Passau was dissolved in 2004.
