Up Ceylan

Rauf Ceylan (born June 19, 1976 in Duisburg ) is a German sociologist and religious educator . Since 2009 he has been Professor of Sociology of Religion at the University of Osnabrück .

Scientific career

Ceylan studied at the Department of Social and Cultural Studies in Düsseldorf . After graduating, he also worked there as a research assistant. At the same time he worked at the Institute for Housing, Real Estate Management, Urban and Regional Development and studied at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Ceylan was later employed as a research assistant in the department of the Lord Mayor of Duisburg . There he took over the academic support on the topics of Islam , Islamic organizations as well as migration and integration issues . At the Ruhr-University Bochum Ceylan was in sociology Dr. rer. soc. doctorate and at the University of Vechta in religious education to the doctor of philosophy. Since September 2009 he has been teaching sociology of religion at the University of Osnabrück. In the winter semester 2018/19 he accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Zurich. Furthermore, since 2008 he has been training Turkish imams in Turkey on behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in regional studies and integration issues. Ceylan is a member of various scientific committees, including a. in the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) and in the Council for Migration (RfM). In 2019 Ceylan received a W3 call to the Humboldt University of Berlin. There he was supposed to help set up the new Institute for Islamic Theology. However, he declined the offer to the Humboldt University of Berlin, because the University of Osnabrück offered him a professorship for contemporary research at the University of Osnabrück. Ceylan justified his decision in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung with better framework conditions in migration and religion research. University President Susanne Menzel-Riedl emphasized the “enormous importance” Ceylan had for the whole university.

Research priorities

One of Ceylan's scientific priorities is contemporary Islamic and migration research on the community of Turkish origin in the diaspora, with the aspects of Turkish mosques in the socio-spatial context, the role and function of Turkish imams, mosques, religion and migration playing a special role. In his book on ethnic colonies, he describes the role Turkish mosques and men's cafes play in the integration process of migrants of Turkish origin in Germany. In his publications, he deals with the topics mentioned theoretically and empirically. In 2015 Ceylan wrote his debut novel Die Türkensiedlung . In this autobiographically inspired novel, he describes socialization in a residential area in the 1980s.
