The Ravensberger Gymnasium is one of three high schools in the East Westphalian city of Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The Ravensberger Gymnasium is located on the outskirts of the city center of Herford in a quiet green area on Werrestrasse and is easy to reach thanks to good transport connections, even for foreign students. The Friedrichs-Gymnasium Herford is within sight . The train station is also not far away with a 15-minute walk.

history

In 1868 the Ravensberger Gymnasium was founded as an agricultural school in a building on Elisabethstrasse with three teachers and 22 students. In 1896 this school was converted into an agricultural and secondary school, and it was moved to a new school building on Münsterkirchplatz. In 1922 the agricultural school separated and was taken over by the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture as an agricultural school , which later became the Herford School of Agricultural Economics .

From the school year 1926/1927 this secondary school was expanded to become an upper secondary school (for boys); thus the students now had the opportunity to take the Abitur examination. The first Abitur exams took place in 1928. That year 494 students attended the school. In 1937 the facility was renamed High School for Boys . Since the Queen Mathilde School served as a military hospital during World War II , its students and teachers also used the building of the secondary school. The north side of the school building was badly damaged in an air raid on November 9, 1944. After the American invasion of Herford, the school was closed from April 1945 to February 1946.

In the course of the school reform after the Second World War, a further conversion of the upper secondary school into a modern language and mathematical and natural science high school with 450 students took place in 1948 . In 1954 this school was given the current name Ravensberger Gymnasium . The last move so far took place in April 1960 to the new building on Lübberbruch . Eight years later this building was expanded. The first 33 girls entered the school in 1974. In 2015, it was named a school without racism - school with courage . School and project sponsors are the German magician duo Ehrlich Brothers .

In the summer of 2018, the Ravensberger Gymnasium celebrated its 150th anniversary with numerous events.

In March 2019, the city administration of Herford permanently closed the new scientific rooms, which had only opened in mid-2018 after several years of renovation, due to fire protection problems. The fire protection was irreparably damaged during the construction work. At the end of June 2019, the city administration announced that the school was to be partially rebuilt, which should be completed in early 2022.

Furnishing

In addition to numerous classrooms and specialist rooms, the school has its own cafeteria, which is run by volunteer parents. In addition, a self-study center with 30 workstations and 16 networked computers is available to upper-level students . The directly neighboring city theater is used as an auditorium for concerts, performances and lectures. There are also two sports halls and corresponding outdoor facilities.

particularities

The Ravensberger Gymnasium and the Friedrichs-Gymnasium cooperate in the area of the upper level. There is a wide range of basic and advanced courses. In 1989 the pilot project "Advanced course in computer science" started at the RGH. The school was one of the first schools to have computer science in its program and the course can also be taken as an advanced course in the Abitur.

The students of the Ravensberger Gymnasium have the opportunity to take part in exchange programs several times during their school career. The partner schools are located in Fredericia ( Denmark ), Bourg-en-Bresse ( France ) and San Jose ( California ).
