Ravi Veloo

Ravi Veloo (born September 30, 1959 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean journalist and writer .

Life

Ravi Veloo, who published under his full name Ravindran Veloo until 1990 , is the son of a stowaway . He grew up near the Toa Payoh district, attended the Victoria School in Singapore and graduated from Monash University in Melbourne , Australia in 1987 in sociology .

As a journalist, Veloo wrote for the Singaporean daily newspaper The Straits Times for 17 years , most recently as a senior correspondent, and various Australian newspapers. As part of the Fulbright program , Veloo taught at the journalism faculty at Boston University . For his journalistic work he received the Journalist of the Year award for 1990, which is presented by the Press Foundation of Asia ( Manila ) and the Mitsubishi Public Affairs Committee ( Chiyoda-ku , Tokyo ).

In 1982 Ravi Veloo's play The Play Within was submitted to the Singapore Play Writing Competition, won a prize and appeared in 1986 for a selection of plays. His first novel, Kampung Chicken , published in 1990, is a fable about traditional Malay village life. In 2001 a collection of articles and columns appeared under the name No Room at the Inn . In the eponymous report, Ravi Veloo writes about an attempt to test the hospitality of hotels in Singapore with a pregnant woman and little money at Christmas. The 2002 book The Difference Between Malaysians and Singaporeans was written in collaboration with cartoonist Puay Koon Cheng . His novel Radio Multiverse , which appeared exclusively for Amazon Kindle in 2011 , is about parallel worlds.

He has translated publications into Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Tamil.
