Puay Koon Cheng

Puay Koon Cheng (* 1973 ) is a Singaporean illustrator and is one of the most sought-after artists in the country.

Life

Puay Koon Cheng started painting when she was 10 years old, drawing faces of people she had seen on television. After completing school and studying, she worked as a journalist for The Straits Times , Singapore's largest daily newspaper and then for The New Paper , Singapore's second largest daily newspaper. She was the art director when the Today newspaper launched in 2000 .

She has two daughters.

In 2002 she worked with writer Ravi Veloo and illustrated his book The Difference Between Malaysians and Singaporeans . Since then she has illustrated more than 50 children's books that were published in English and Malay , for example from 2012 to 2017 the ABBIE ROSE & the magic suitcase series by Neil Humphreys , published by Marshall Cavendish , in collaboration with the National Parks Board of Singapore . When one of Neil Humphreys' stories was screened as an animated film , Secrets of the Swamp , in 2016 , Puay Koon Cheng was the lead illustrator. She worked with Ravi Veloo again in 2011 by illustrating his book Radio Multiverse . She also illustrated children's books by other authors such as Search Christine Lim , Anupa Roy and Emily Lim-Leh .

Her often very detailed pen-stroke portraits are more like caricatures of the people portrayed.
