Raymond Downey

Raymond 'Ray' Downey (born September 23, 1968 in Halifax County, Nova Scotia ) is a retired Canadian boxer . Downey was a bronze medalist in the 1988 Olympic Games and a silver medalist in the 1990 Commonwealth Games .

Career

amateur

Downey was Canadian light middleweight (-71 kg) champion in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

In 1988 Downey started at the Olympic Games and won after victories over Jorge Lopez, Argentina (5: 0), Norbert Nieroba , Germany (3: 2), in the round of 16 over Hussain Shah Syed , Pakistan (5: 0), and in the quarter-finals over Martin Kitel, Sweden (5: 0), and a semi-final defeat against the eventual Olympic champion Park Si-hun , South Korea (5: 0), the bronze medal.

At the Commonwealth Games in 1990 Downey reached the final, which he lost to Richie Woodhall , England (4-1). In the same year he started at the Goodwill Games in Seattle , but was eliminated in the first fight against Alexander Lebsjak , Soviet Union (5-0). The same happened to him at the Pan American Games in 1991 , where he suffered a knockout loss to Juan Carlos Lemus , Cuba . At the 1991 World Championships , Downey failed in the quarter-finals at the later bronze medalist Ole Klemetsen, Norway (36:12).

In 1992 Downey took part again in the Olympic Games , after a defeat against Hendrik Simangunsong, Indonesia (12: 5), did not get beyond the preliminary round.

professional

Downey made his professional debut in 1994 and remained unbeaten in 11 fights until 1997 when he lost to Antoine Barrett, USA , by a technical knockout in the first round. Another five wins later he lost another fight against Victor Ramos, USA, by a technical knockout in the second round in 2000 and then ended his career.
