Reçak ( Albanian  also  Reçaku , Serbian Рачак Račak ) is a village in the center of Kosovo and belongs to the municipality of Shtime .

geography

Reçak is a village in central Kosovo, around half a kilometer southwest of the city of Shtime . The village is located on the eastern edge of the Crnoljeva mountain range (also: Carraleva), which runs in a north-south direction . This separates the two flatlands Amselfeld (also: Kosovo or Kosovo-Polje ) and Metochien from each other , crisscrossed by a few connecting roads .

The 2011 census showed a population of 1638 for Reçak. 1629 of them identified themselves as Albanians , one as Bosniaks and eight people gave no answer regarding their nationality.

In 2011, of the 1631 inhabitants, 1492 professed Islam and seven people gave no answer regarding their beliefs.

Račak massacre

The Račak massacre took place between January 15 and 16, 1999, during the war in Kosovo . At least 40 civilians were shot dead by Yugoslav security forces in the massacre. The leadership of Yugoslavia had declared the victims to be members of the paramilitary organization UÇK , who were killed by the police in a fighting operation with which the police responded to the murder of a police officer by members of the group.
