Rebecca Gibney is the youngest of six children born to gardener Austin Gibney and his wife Shirley. The family moved to Wellington shortly after Rebecca's birth .

The enthusiastic athlete, who was once the third best trampoline gymnast in her country, actually wanted to become a nurse , but after school she first worked as a photo model . In 1984 she moved to Australia where she began taking speaking lessons to help her overcome her harsh accent . This paid off very quickly when, after a few minor supporting roles , she got her first major television role in the children's series Zoo Family in 1985 .

In the same year Gibney had her breakthrough in The Flying Doctors , a popular and successful Australian television series about the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia . In order to get the role of the auto mechanic Emma Plimpton , she appeared - appropriate to the character of the role - in casual clothes and without make-up for the casting , as she was later seen on television.

After five seasons, she dropped out of the series and then played the female lead from 1991 to 1993 in the Australian sitcom Rock 'n' Roll Daddy, which was no less successful . In the early 1990s she created the role of Jane Halifax , a forensic psychologist, who she impersonated in 21 episodes from 1994 to 2002. The Halifax series has been sold in more than 60 countries.

The practicing Christian uses her popularity to support charitable projects. She has repeatedly shot for World Vision reports in several African countries and in Bangladesh and became the godmother of two orphans. Gibney has also supported an initiative to educate people about mental illness since the mid-1990s . Even suffering from social phobia , she had previously repeatedly been noticed by panic attacks during filming and PR meetings.

Gibney was married to the lead singer and guitarist of the Australian rock group Southern Sons , Jack Jones , from 1992 to 1995 . In 2001 she married production designer Richard Bell. The couple has a son.
