Rebiya Kadeer (born July 15, 1948 in the Altai Mountains , Xinjiang , People's Republic of China ) is a Uyghur human rights activist and former president of the World Uyghur Congress (WUC). She campaigns for the rights of the Uyghurs in the People's Republic of China, most of whom live in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region . She endeavors to influence international opinion in favor of the Uighur minority, and is thus particularly heard in the USA and the western world.

biography

After the divorce from her first husband, the 27-year-old mother of six started her own business in the textile trade. She was so successful with it that in the end she owned two department stores in Urumqi .

In 1978 she married the former Uyghur resistance fighter Sidik Rouzi and with him they have three other children and two adopted children. She was elected chairman of the Xinjiang Chamber of Commerce and the 1992 Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. She soon became active as an advocate for women's rights and was a member of the Chinese government's delegation to the United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.

In 1997, Kadeer gave a speech at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in which she strongly condemned the Chinese government's policies in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Shortly afterwards she was expelled from the People's Congress. Also in 1997 she founded the "Thousand Mothers Movement" to promote women's rights and their economic opportunities.

In 1999 she was sentenced to eight years in prison for divulging state secrets - she had given American MPs newspaper articles for her husband, but by then they had been published long ago. On March 17, 2005, she was released early due to international pressure. Kadeer followed her husband into exile, escaped an attack a little later (January 2006) and now lives in the USA . Five of her children are still being held and persecuted in China. In 2004 she received the Norwegian Human Rights Prize Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize . China justifies the repression measures with the fight against " separatism , terrorism and religious fanaticism".

In November 2006 she was elected President of the World Uyghur Congress in Munich , but she continues to live in exile in the United States. In November 2017 she was replaced by Dolkun Isa .
