Calculator is a calculator - software from Apple that with the operating systems macOS and iOS is supplied as standard.

Functions

The app can be used in two different modes. There are normal and advanced modes.

In normal mode there are only the simplest elements of a calculator. You can use the four basic arithmetic operations, calculate with rational and whole numbers, specify numbers in percent and set signs manually (negative and positive numbers). The largest legal number here is 100,000,000. All numbers beyond that must be represented as powers of ten or using scientific notation .

The extended mode can be accessed by swiveling the mobile device into landscape format. Now there is, among other things, the possibility to calculate with powers, to use a selection from formulas of trigonometry, to apply logarithms and to use the in function. Functions of a GTR are not supported. In order to take advantage of such functions, one can fall back on the extended office application Numbers from Apple or use third-party software. The largest possible number increases here to one quadrillion. Anything beyond that must be represented as a power of ten or in scientific notation, as in normal mode.

Installation and uninstallation

Before iOS 12 , the app was preinstalled in the Utilities folder. There was no way to remove it. It has been possible to uninstall and install from the AppStore since iOS 12. The software is not available on non-Apple in-house operating systems. The counterpart of the same name to Microsoft calc.exe is only available on Windows devices.

design

The app is kept simple and simple. You rely on a color palette consisting of the colors orange , black and gray . The black keys are reserved for the numbers, the orange for the operators and the various gray keys such as "Delete all" or the percent symbol.

Missing on the iPads

The calculator app is not available on any of the Apple iPad devices. This results from a misunderstanding between Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall , the software boss at Apple at the time. He thought he should only scale the calculator app to the iPad proportions. On the day of publication, Steve Jobs asked him about the new design, which had not been developed. Steve Jobs finally banned the upscaled computer design from being released on the iPads. It remains that way to this day. On iPads, you have to use third-party providers from the App Store .
