Redemption is an American documentary - short film by directors Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill from the year 2012. The film presents the situation of the Canners represent the people in the American metropolis New York City who are dependent by collecting of returnable bottles and cans to make a living. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Documentary Short Film ".

content

The documentary introduces various “canners”, men and women who collect returnable bottles and cans on the streets of New York City, and lets them have their say. The main actors include

  • Jamie, a 54-year-old former factory worker;
  • Lilly, a 55-year-old former restaurant worker;
  • Mr. John, a 58-year-old Japanese who worked in the World Trade Center;
  • Nuve, a 36-year-old Ecuadorian and mother of four;
  • Susan, a 64-year-old former New York sales manager at IBM ;
  • Walter, a 66-year-old homeless war veteran and former doorman.

Walter explains, among other things, how much the number of bottle collectors has risen for some time, and describes the efforts that the Canners take on: In order to be able to make a living from it, they have to work hard, sometimes collecting up to 20 hours a day. For collectors, most of it pays off in bottles and cans. In addition to the competition in which the collectors face each other, the film also presents the friendly atmosphere within the community of collectors, who have a lot of contact with each other and often also support each other. The Canner portray their situation in life, like Lilly, a bottle collector who shares a small room in Chinatown with six others and is thus better off than many homeless collectors. The question of the cause of the steadily growing number of canners is also asked and is often found in the loss of jobs. The lack of jobs also makes it almost impossible for most of the Canner to go back to paid work, which is why they only have to collect deposits.

production

The idea for the documentary came from Sheila Nevins, the head of the documentary department at the television station HBO. After she noticed a bottle collector, she asked about the personal stories and backgrounds of these people. Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill began work on the documentary, which lasted around two and a half years. In the first few months they tried to establish contact with the community of bottle and can collectors without a camera in order to create a basis of trust. So they were increasingly informed about the processes and how people interacted, which helped them to get into conversation with people for their documentation. At the beginning of 2010 filming began and in the end you had footage to produce a full-length documentary. When editing the footage, however, the two documentary filmmakers decided to release Redemption as a short film that ended up being 35 minutes long. The film music drove Jonathan at Zalben.

The film premiered on April 5, 2013 at the Ashland Independent Film Festival and was first broadcast on October 14, 2013 on the American television channel HBO . It was also Redemption of ShortsHD and Magnolia Pictures brought together with the 14 other Oscar-nominated short films from the year 2013 as an anthology to the movies.
