Reek of Putrefaction is the debut album by the English grindcore band Carcass . It was released in June 1988 by Earache Records and offered a hitherto unique concept of medical terms combined with an artwork that showed a collage of autopsy photos.

Emergence

After the release of the first demo Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment (1987) Digby Pearson of Earache Records offered the group a recording deal. Ken Owen then began songwriting and was later assisted by Bill Steer . Bassist and singer Jeff Walker wrote his lyrics using the medical dictionary of his sister, who was just training to be a nurse. In December 1987 the recordings took place in the Ritch Bitch Studio with sound engineer Mike Ivory and lasted four days. Since the band was dissatisfied with the result, the studio recordings were remixed several times until March 1988 .

After the album was released, radio presenter John Peel was impressed by Reek of Putrefaction , played the songs in his broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and declared the album in the British newspaper The Observer as his personal "Record of the Year 1988". Carcass had taken the autopsy photos for the record cover from various medical magazines. Bill Steer later explained that the album's repulsive presentation should provoke and, in his opinion, show a certain tendency towards humor.

reception

Due to the precise and shrill guitar solos used and the alternating vocals between high shouts and deep growling, the album is considered to be an essential impetus for the further development of the grindcore genre. Carcass was the first band in the genre to add metal elements to Grindcore, and thus for the first time succeeded in combining Grindcore and Death Metal.
