Refik Erduran

Ahmet Refik Erduran (born February 13, 1928 in Istanbul ; † January 7, 2017 in Edirne ) was a Turkish writer, playwright and journalist. He wrote 30 plays and eight books.

Life

Erduran was born in 1928 as the son of Hüsamettin Erduran and his wife Refika in Salacak in the Istanbul district of Üsküdar . His sister Leyla was four years older than him. Erduran grew up with a French-speaking Catholic nanny. So he spoke French early on.

From 1934 he attended the Nilüfer-Hatun primary school, in 1938 he switched to the English-speaking Robert College in Istanbul. After graduating from college, he went to the United States in 1947 and enrolled in theater history at Cornell University . After his return home, Erduran did his military service and was a reserve officer. He was sent to the Korean War (1950–1953) with the “Turkish Brigade” , where he worked as an interpreter.

In 1954/55 he headed the satire magazine TEF. After the magazine ended in 1955, he worked as a freelance writer. Erduran wrote his first play Deli in 1957. By 2012 he had written 30 plays, most of them comedies and vaudeville plays . He became known in the late 1950s with Bir Kilo Namus (1958) and Cengiz Han'ın Bisikleti (1959).

At the invitation of Milliyet editor-in-chief Abdi İpekçi , he wrote columns for the daily newspaper from 1965, and later also for Güneş , Meydan and Sabah .

In 1995 he accompanied the Bosnian elite unit "Black Swans" in the Bosnian War to demonstrate his symbolic resistance against the Serbs . He described his experiences there in reports for Milliyet . These were later published in the book Bosnalı Samuraylar Collected.

Erduran died in a hospital in Edirne at the age of 88. His remains were transferred to Istanbul and buried two days later in the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.

Private life

Erduran was married four times. In 1950 he married Nâzım Hikmet's stepsister Melda Kalyoncu, who gave birth to son Murat in 1953. But the marriage lasted only five years. In 1958 he married the journalist Leyla Umar. The couple divorced two years later, but stayed together until 1977. In 1992 Erduran married Sevim Tülay Güngör. But this marriage only lasted five years. In 1997 Erduran married Pınar Duygu, 35 years his junior, the daughter of his third wife from a previous marriage. The couple had a son in 1997 and twins in 2002. However, the marriage was annulled as "immoral" by a court in February 2003 after a lawyer sued it.

honors and awards

In 1986 Erduran became President of the International Theater Institute (ITI) in Turkey. At the ITI Congress in Helsinki in 1989, he was elected chairman of the association's authors' committee. At the invitation of the Iowa Writers' Workshop , he spent a year at the University of Iowa . He then lived in California for seven to eight years to adapt his works for television. At the same time he continued to work as a journalist and ran the West American news office of Milliyet . His piece Ramiz ile Jülide earned him the 1995 Yunus Emre Competition Prize.
