The Refuge de Leschaux is a refuge in the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc section of the Club Alpin Français . It is located in France in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region at an altitude of 2,431 m . It is the usual starting point for the north face of the Grandes Jorasses . Access is via the Mer de Glace and the Leschaux Glacier from Montenvers .
history
A first refuge was built in 1929 thanks to a donation from Dr. Étienne May built at the foot of the Pierre-Joseph-Nadel on the right bank of the Leschaux glacier. It was expanded to 30 places in 1934 and destroyed by an avalanche in 1954. In 1967, the modern precast construction, which was initially supposed to replace the Capanna Solvey on the Hörnligrat in the Matterhorn, was finally installed near the old location and offered by the Club Alpin Belge of the Paris-Chamonix section of the CAF. Initially with 12 seats, it was expanded in 2003.
Others
In Roger Frison-Roche's novel Retour à la montagne , the heroine Brigitte accepts the poorly paid supervision of the Leschaux refuge.
