The Refuge des Écrins , also known as Refuge Caron , is a refuge of the Briançon section of the Club Alpin Français in Pelvoux , part of the Dauphiné Alps , at an altitude of 3,172 m in the immediate vicinity of the southernmost and westernmost four-thousand- meter peak in the Alps, the Barre des Écrins .
location
The refuge des Écrins is located on a rocky pulpit above the Glacier Blanc glacier , which is crossed during the ascent. Due to its location, the hut offers an ideal panoramic view, including of the Barre des Écrins . Maintained in spring and summer, the hut can be reached on foot in four and a half hours from Pré de Madame Carle , where the road from Ailefroide ends. On the way to the Refuge des Écrins , the Refuge du Glacier Blanc is passed. Access is also possible via the Col des Écrins .
description
The Refuge des Écrins is a three-storey building made of granite blocks. A platform serves as a helicopter landing pad for rescue operations and to supply the hut, which is usually maintained from around the beginning of April to mid-September.
history
In 1903 the first accommodation was built in an arch of the Glacier Blanc glacier in the area below the peaks Col Émile Pic and Roche Faurio , the Abri Caron . The wooden hut offered only a few places. It was named after Ernest Caron, the former president of the Briançon section of the Club Alpin Français and president of the Club Alpin Français since 1998. This hut was destroyed by fire in 1921.
A larger hut, also made of wood, was built immediately afterwards and offered space for 36 people.
The development of alpinism after the war made it clear from the beginning of the 1960s that a much larger new building was needed. In the spring of 1968, work began on the new accommodation. 170 tons of building material were transported by helicopter under sometimes challenging weather conditions. The shell construction was completed in September 1968. The interior was completed the following year. On June 22, 1969, the new accommodation was opened for mountaineers. The official inauguration took place on September 16, 1969. The previously existing wooden hut was dismantled.
